How ABA therapy helps, and why home works so well

Children with autism often learn a skill in one place and struggle to use it somewhere else. Therapy in the comfort of your own home teaches the skill right where it's needed: at your table, in your bathroom, on your stairs. That's how ABA therapy works best for many young children.

Your child doesn't have to get used to a new building first. You don't lose an hour to traffic on I-95 or Broad Street. Siblings, pets and the real family routine become part of the practice.

  • Sessions at home, at a time that fits your week
  • Goals built around your family's real day
  • You see what the therapist does and learn it too

What the experts say

Parents are part of the team

Good ABA doesn't happen only when the therapist is in the room. Researchers who study early autism programs keep finding the same thing: children do better when parents learn the strategies and use them in everyday routines. That's why parent coaching is built into every in-home plan we write.

How our parent training works

“The treatment model shows that parents can learn to support their child's learning in everyday activities, and that this can result in improvements in the child's overall development and specifically in social communication and autism symptoms”

Insurance and Virginia Medicaid, handled for you

Most families in Richmond pay for ABA through insurance. Virginia law requires many state-regulated health plans to cover autism treatment, and Virginia Medicaid covers ABA for children who qualify. We check your plan before you start, so there are no surprises.

Applied behavior analysis led by a licensed BCBA

Your child's program is designed by a Board Certified Behavior Analyst. BCBAs hold board certification from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board, and in Virginia every behavior analyst must also be a Licensed Behavior Analyst through the Board of Medicine. The BCBA assesses your child, sets goals and checks the data every week.

The methods are evidence-based. ABA strategies like positive reinforcement, breaking skills into small steps and teaching inside play help children build communication and new skills. Our behavior analysts individualize every plan, and your BCBA explains each strategy so you can use it to help your child between sessions.

Sessions are run by a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT), certified by the Behavior Analyst Certification Board and supervised by the BCBA. You get a short update after sessions and a real conversation about progress every month.

Where Richmond's ABA providers are, and where they aren't

We pulled the ABA therapy listings Google Maps shows within 25 miles of Richmond: 57 of them, for an area with 142,512 children under 10 (US Census, 2020 to 2024 survey). The ZIP codes with the most are 23233 and 23294 in Henrico's West End and 23112 in Midlothian. Southside Richmond (23224) and Bensley (23237) have none.

Many in-home providers list an office far from the families they visit, so a short drive on this chart is not the whole story. It does show that families in Southside Richmond and the East End have fewer listings close by.

For therapy at home, distance matters because a therapist drives to you. If you have been told "we don't serve your area", tell us your ZIP code. We plan our team's routes around the families who call.

The hard questions Richmond parents ask

We read what local parents say online. These are the worries that come up again and again, with our straight answers.

“I don’t want strangers in my home.”

That's fair. You meet your BCBA before therapy starts, and we try to keep the same small team with your child. You can be in the room, nearby, or busy with your day. You set the house rules.

“What if the therapist keeps cancelling?”

Missed sessions slow progress. Ask any provider, including us, how they cover sessions when a technician is sick or leaves. A good answer names a backup plan, not a promise.

“How many hours will my child need?”

It depends on your child's age, needs and goals. The BCBA recommends hours after the assessment, and your insurance has to approve them. We will explain the number and how it fits your family's week.

“Isn’t ABA harmful?”

Some autistic adults describe bad experiences with older, rigid ABA. Modern ABA should be play-based, respect your child's comfort and never punish. You should always be welcome to watch, ask why, and say no to any goal.

Frequently asked questions about autism therapy in Richmond

What's in-home ABA therapy?

In-home ABA therapy is applied behavior analysis delivered in your house instead of a clinic. A BCBA designs the plan and a behavior technician works one-on-one with your child during sessions at home.

Do you take Virginia Medicaid?

Yes. We work with Virginia Medicaid health plans and most major commercial insurance. Medicaid covers ABA for children under 21 who meet the medical need rules, and an authorization is needed first. We handle that paperwork with you.

Does my child need an autism diagnosis to start?

Most insurance plans, including Medicaid, ask for a diagnosis and a doctor's order before they pay for ABA. If you're still waiting on an evaluation, call us anyway. We can explain the steps and where to get an evaluation in Richmond.

What ages do you work with?

We work with children from 18 months to 12 years. Starting young helps, and ABA for toddlers is mostly play.

Do I have to be home during sessions?

Yes, a parent or another caregiver over 18 needs to be at home during every in-home session. You don't have to sit in the room the whole time, but we will ask you to join for parts of it.

How much does ABA therapy cost, and does insurance cover ABA therapy?

With insurance, most families pay a copay or coinsurance, and some pay nothing on Medicaid. Without insurance, ABA is billed by the hour. Our cost guide shows how the numbers add up.

Can therapy sessions happen at daycare or school?

Sometimes. Some insurance plans allow sessions in other places your child spends time, like daycare. We check what your plan allows and coordinate with your child's teachers and IEP team when you want us to.

Do you work with my child's other therapists?

Yes. Many children with autism spectrum disorder also see a speech therapist or get occupational therapy. With your permission, your BCBA shares goals with them so your child hears the same words from everyone. We support your child's whole team, not just our part.

How soon can we start?

It depends on your insurance approval and on staff in your part of town. We give you an honest start date on the first call instead of a vague waitlist.

Ready to talk about ABA at home?
